Fly Fishing Report for Anna Maria Island: September 11, 2024

Good evening, fly anglers! Tomorrow’s conditions are ideal for fly fishing, especially in the morning before afternoon storms move in.

Weather and Conditions

  • Temperature: Starting at 80°F in the morning, climbing to 87°F by the afternoon.
  • Wind: Light winds at 6 mph, perfect for smooth casting.
  • Water Temperature: 84°F, keeping fish like snook and redfish feeding actively in the morning.

Tides and Timing

  • High Tide: 9:30 AM at 2.3 feet
  • Low Tide: 4:30 PM at 0.4 feet

The morning high tide will be the best time to target snook, redfish, and trout as they move into the shallow flats to feed.

Top Fly Fishing Spots

  • Sarasota Bay Grass Flats: Ideal for targeting redfish and trout as they move into the grass flats with the incoming tide.
  • Perico Bayou: Snook will be actively feeding around the mangroves. Focus on structure to land a good catch.
  • Bimini Bay: Perfect for sight fishing in calm waters during the early morning.

Fly Selection

  • Shrimp Patterns: Best for redfish and snook.
  • Clouser Minnows: Effective for sea trout in the flats.
  • Crab Patterns: Great for working the shallow waters during high tide.

Safety Tip: Be mindful of thunderstorms forecasted to arrive by 3-4 PM. Plan to wrap up fishing before the weather turns(Weather.gov)(The Islander).
